Kofi Danso is originally from Ghana in West Africa where wood carving is an ancient tradition and very respected cultural art form. At the age of seventeen he became an apprentice to a master wood carver in the town of Fu, in the Volta Region of Ghana. After realizing Kofi’s natural carving ability, his teacher released him from the apprenticeship after three years of a six year contract.
From there, he went on to carve and sell his own creations to shops and tourists around the country. He has taught traditional carving to students from all over the globe including Spain, Germany, and Australia, as well as several Ghanain apprentices. Admirers of Kofi’s work have spread his original creations throughout the world.
Kofi has been living in Colorado since 1999 where he continues to sculpt. He also makes regular trips home to Ghana to work and reconnect with the origins of his art. His contemporary style still strives to reflect his traditional African background.
Kofi has participated in the Art and Jazz Festival in Grand Junction and has displayed and sold his work in Original Accents, also in Grand Junction, and African Odyssey in Aspen. He has also sold many pieces through word of mouth to individuals who have a great appreciation for the simple, complexities of the sculpture that he continues to create.
